Gemini flash seems to have been a bit of a sleeper. Somehow it's ended up as the most used LLM for my client document extraction work these past few months.

I have an eval harness that runs every Thursday to determine which models are the current best for a few different client workflows. And since May(?) flash has slowly been taking over more and more stuff to the point it is now 100% on 8 out of 11 document extraction flows with the other 3 being a Flash / Opus 4.8 mix for high value stuff where cost is less of a factor.

Look, it don't always have to be "original" to be interesting. That said, seems the combination of AI use and the subject matter is hitting folks the wrong way. That's fine.-

People read blogs / content for gleaning some meaningful insight from original perspective, thought, or opinion.

If I wanted the thoughts of an LLM I have access to 10 different ones right now and I can ask to get instant answers and dig deeper where I need to.

Using AI for this sort of content is like sitting on the toilet backwards. No one is stopping you, but there is nothing gained, you're just doing it wrong and it's obvious to everyone.

OpenAI probably has 3 main reasons

1. Opportunity cost of shifting their team to work on a cursor/ firebase studio/ windsurf clone while they are locked into a model arms race might be worth much more than $3 billion if risk losing supremacy

2. They get a million users day one of the deal getting done and instantly own the team + the number 2 best IDE which gives them a massive boost over all their other model competitors like Google and Anthropic. Personally, I still think we are early enough that building makes more sense, so reason 1 still feels the strongest.

3. You get the dedicated windsurf team that can focus 100% on this product while your main model teams can keep cranking

IMO people underestimate effort of hiring people with domain expertise for this. Maybe they can try to buy one person from these teams and then have it help build the core IDE team but this will take much longer than just buying a very strong team.
