I highly recommend just getting out of Anthropic's (or anyone's) vendor lock-in. Use opencode or pi. You can still use your subscription pricing using a proxy. I switched to opencode and haven't looked back.
I use OpenCode with my ChatGPT subscription, which is officially supported on both sides and a damn good deal (OpenCode Go is great too).
OpenCode has “providers” for many (many!) other services, but these are almost all unofficial and against ToS (Anthropic being famous for ban-hammering people).
FYI, you can use your Claude subscription pricing with OpenCode via Meridian[0], which also makes it easier to try out other models when they come out. You can also use your other subscriptions in OpenCode with CLIProxyAPI[1]. The switching cost was relatively high, mostly from claude code plugins but completely worth it. I'm now mostly using GLM-5.3 and Codex models via OpenCode and barely using Claude which seemed unfathomable less than two months ago.
I'm sometimes tempted to use these sorts of proxies, but I always worry that the hacks they have to use to wrap the upstream tools and APIs is going to mess with my downstream harness/agent.
I had a very similar experience. The combination of Claude going down frequently and the hype around open source models was enough for me to swap my harness from Claude Code to OpenCode. Then it became trivial to test out different models, and now the rest is history. Currently using OpenCode with z.ai and Codex $200/m plans for all my work atm.
+1 for Paseo. Switched over to it a few weeks ago from conductor.build then superset.sh. The mobile app plus Hetzner VPS has been really enjoyable in terms of just firing off random tasks and not being stuck at my desk.
The biggest thing is that Paseo's mobile app is out and pretty much has feature parity with its desktop app. I've been waiting on superset.sh's mobile app for a while, which is what made me look around and find Paseo. On desktop, they both get the job done and depend on whether you prefer a terminal-based or native chat experience.

Yes. Hedging results in a middle-of-the-road answer that, at best, comes across as lukewarm. Companies want to hire people they're excited about and are convinced fit into their culture. An honest answer will get you more strong noes but also more strong yeses, and strong yeses turn into offers. Hedging, produces only weak yeses and noes, which tend to end in no offers especially in tighter job markets like the one we're in.
The statement "my options on who will hire me are kind of limited" is a bit misleading. Limited compared to whom? Your options are abundant compared to most people.
It sounds like you are waiting on a fantasy position that has both interesting work and pays at least the same as your current position, which you have 13 years of experience in. That's not usually how life works. There are trade-offs.
If you want to do a different type of work that you don't have any professional experience in, you are going to have to take a pay cut. As you mentioned, you're fortunate to be making 3x what you need. It's up to you whether it's worth "only" making 2x what you need in order to do work you find more engaging.
This is not a unique circumstance. People make this trade-off all the time. Maybe talk to some people who did.

I mean this with all the respect in the world, but no shit. That's what I'm frustrated about. I feel like the entire thing I wrote was specifically because I am aware of these tradeoff. Just because the tradeoffs exist doesn't mean I have to like them.
I know that my dream job doesn't really exist, at least not in numbers large enough to even bother considering, and I'm not naive enough to really think that pivoting to another career will suddenly solve all my problems and frustrations.
