Well in my mind is no one else cares and the EU is holier than pope. We are destroying our economy for promile of world polution and are even shamed for using AC.

This narrative is dangerous. If everyone points to their own limited influence and points fingers at the rest of the world, no one is going to act.

It’s the "it’s real, but we cannot do anything about it" rung on the climate denialist ladder. Yes, it is dangerous. It is also mainstream. There are several examples in this thread.

We are focusing on wrong things. Nuclear and off coal/gas should have been priority for last 50 years. And should be priority next 50. But Russian propaganda entrenched in spy infested austria and germany forces cheap gas upon us… and now we have to pay the price.

> Nuclear and off coal/gas should have been priority for last 50 years.

No argument from me. It would not have completely saved us but we’d be in a better position now. The absolute priority should be to avoid burning fossil fuels for energy.

> But Russian propaganda entrenched in spy infested austria and germany forces cheap gas upon us

Indeed. Germany’s energy policy was a huge risk and set Europe back. I am not sure whether Schröder was a useful idiot or a willing pawn, but the fact that there was no reckoning is very disappointing. And all of Merkel’s balancing act came to naught anyway. So much time wasted…

Europe is already acting, its the rest of the world that isn't.

Game theory gives all of us an optimal solution, so we all should care about every bit, no matter the global proportion. Btw. Chians per capital CO2 emission is lower than most of europe.

Yeah but earth is not heating up per capita. And all the developing world emissions are rising. We go to extreme to not even move the needle. Then china takes our factories, because we have expensive energy and stricter safety laws - i am not arguing against it. And europe is left economically decimated.

Could you provide a link to people being shamed for using AC?

It’s becoming less, but the formerly widespread traditional view in Europe was that using AC is a frivolous waste of energy that contributes to environmental pollution and global warming.

Traditionally we didn't have 40c summers that required AC.

Indeed, but there is a significant latency between the climate changing and minds changing.

Its part of disrourse. Every left/communist says that AC will not solve the heat and we should not install it. We know it wont. But not having it makes the heats unbearable.

"We must absolutely not install air conditioning everywhere; that would only make things worse." The words of Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the radical left La France Insoumise party, on Friday, June 19, in response to the far-right Rassemblement National (RN)'s large-scale air conditioning plan, reflect a widely held sentiment in France.

I am not making stuff up, these people just have too much space in news.

Which part of his statement is a) incorrect b) shaming anyone at all for buying aircon?

Aircon uses a ton of electricity, electricity generation is, at present, hovering around 50% from fossil fuels (in the EU as a whole[1]) which means all other thing being equal you'll be still pumping more CO² into the atmosphere further exacerbating climate change.

So yes, installing aircon everywhere would only make things worse. Those are just verifiable facts.

But you'll note he's not shaming anyone, as per the original claim.

But thanks for the rant, it was highly amusing.

"As for me, I won't put my kid or my granddaughter or my great-granddaughter somewhere with air conditioning from morning to night!" declared Mélenchon

Yeah let them fry.. that is pure leftist bullcrap. Of course aircon uses energy. But in a grand scheme of things it is nothing. And we need to live with consequences of people like him who would fought nuclear energy.

"We must absolutely not install air conditioning everywhere" i dont agree with this, Aircon saves lives. The use of electricity is equivalent, maybe less than using heatpumps or heating houses in winter. Why dont we skip heating?

No they cannot, it’s just a right-wing strawman. And something that perturbs some Americans, for some reason. Another "proof" that Europe is a terrible place inhabited by clueless idiots.

I don’t know if you read beyond the paywall and you don’t present a single argument, so I struggle to see your point. The article has fuck all to do with actually getting shamed for buying AC. Regulations need to change with the climate, that’s a different discussion altogether. The whole point of the article is a nuanced discussion about pros and cons, and why we are where we are.

I am on a bike and cannot properly do the research. But i have read no AC from german, french and brusels leftist think tanks all summer :) almost as it is a sin to have AC when the world is burning and we should suffer.

The article in Le Monde is actually insightful. The tradeoff is a bit more complicated, and "no AC" is not intrinsically a left-leaning position. It’s actually quite interesting to have self-identified right-wing people, who even now moan about woke heat pumps at the same time campaign for AC everywhere.

Personally I am a bit ambivalent. It’s not needed in most cases most of the time, but it could help transitioning en masse to reversible heat pumps, which would be a step in the right direction. What I worry is that it would be hailed as a silver bullet and detract from improving thermal insulation and mitigating techniques that would not require constant energy supply.

We need to see where we will be, not where we are. The electric grid is not going to get more stable in the next years and will get more and more strained as more and more of our economy has to use electricity. Reducing energy use where appropriate should be a higher priority than an AC band-aid.

But my observation of the media landscape is that right-wing politicians hop on everything that can be shown as boneheaded leftists who refuse progress. Of course, the usual useful idiots like Mélenchon are happy to oblige, but the mainstream left-leaning parties are not particularly anti-AC.

Yeah the heat pump is very easy: russia doesn’t want us using heat pumps, because it means using less gas. Same with nuclear. If you start looking at all issues as: what would benefit russia, its easy to spot left and right talking points.

I am in general right in economic and left in personal freedom. And currently i have no representation. Because both extremes are infested with ex KGB/FSB agents causing social unrest in europe. Same with waves of refugees.

Amazon is different beast, humidity, insect fast growing plants. It is nasure on hyperdrive. I wouldn't be surprised if things took 5-10 times faster than england. Or any more dry european places.

Brasil has tried building a highway to Manaus like twice and each time the interior has eaten it. That's with relatively modern tools.

Yeah, i spend some time in south america and you can see that even in Rio. If people left the nature would just gulp it up. fun time sleeping in jungle in Iquitos, its crazy how dens the jungle can be

I mean european forests are mostly monocultures created after we cut down everything natural we had. Maybe fire/warm resistent trees and forests will be planted. Its not like the fires are destroying 20000 years old ecosystems. Most of the forests were basically dead long before.

I mean, yeah. They push some things that would help - to sell its ideas to peole, but in the end if they got to power they would tripple down and do horrible things.

If the german government and its parties actually listened to people, the AFD would have like 5% and would be non issue. Same with all extremist parties tht try to latch on some idea to get voted in.

AFD is reactonary party, russian trojan horse, that just feeds on the Germanys government total failure to listen to its peoples needs. Russia has of course a stake in using E2E, to communicate with their paid actors. But that does not diminish peoples right for privacy. We have a lot of info about russias mingeling but we still do nothing about it. No private chat needed.

Yes and government should not be able to do this.

What i found the most fascinating, is that they say its to protect children. But when you look at real child abuse cases, there are huge gaps in sentencing, policing and protecting kids in all countries. Where i live child abuser will get lower sentence than someone who sold weed. There is a lot of real police work that can be done, honey trap pedos on roblox, infiltrate public whatsapp groups to check and monitor for soliciting. Actually listening and responding to child abuse. Work with schools. But this just requires real work. They don't want to do real work. And at the end, it will get thrown out by some senile corrupted judge.

They just want total control.

It's 100% about control - it's the same in the UK.

Last year it was about having to scan your face to verify your age to access porn (to protect the children). They said: It's not about control, it's about protecting children.

Last month the same government announced they will use the same technology to prevent access to Youtube and Twitter without giving over your ID and confirming who you are... Still under the 'protecting the children' banner.

Not a single person that is not attached to EU voted for he. She is second hand vote. These roles should all be result of direct vote. This way you only get votes by people who are sucking the money of Eu parliament or. The only position people vote for is EP. And that % is so small, that if they ask the people who didn't vote if they want it, they would have to tear it down.

I am not against EU cooperation, mainly in external security and free market economy. But the system we have is not very democratic, and def not very representative of people. They act like demigods, elected by parliament with no real consequences of their actions.

These roles should all be result of direct vote.

I disagree. That's an executive power position for an entity that lacks sovereignty. Giving it the legitimacy of direct vote is highly problematic.

Start by giving more power to parliament.

I think you'll find it's the EU member countries that lack sovereignty, not the EU. EU law overrides member state law, not the other way around.

Back in the day there was a mantra: best amount od code is 0. Now we have agents spitting lines after lines.

I am not afraid of my future. Even if one person can do work of 5, the amount of generated code will grow exponentially. And not everything can he vibecoded with 0 knowledge. There is a complexity that need understanding to change and optimize. For now :)

> Back in the day there was a mantra: best amount od code is 0.

It was true for that time, because producing and maintaining the code was done by humans with limited speed of comprehension.

Today, we might challenge this assumption (not saying its wrong or right), because migrations can be done in 1-2 weeks with hundreds of agents.

Cant it be just some immunity reaction induced by the bacteria what would not translate to humans?

It is an immunity reaction. The bacteria multiplied in the tumors until they triggered an immunity response, which caused the body to destroy the tumors along with the bacteria. Whether or not it translates to humans remains to be seen.
