I'm a long time Kagi user and I haven't used Google search in about a year.

I tried out Google search for a few technical searches recently and it was surprisingly ad and AI free. Not bad at all and much better than I remember from last year.

Then I put in some non-technical searches and it was all ads and AI and basically unusable.

Are there any comparisons to other Rust scripting languages like Rhai and Rune?

Rhai is dynamically typed and uses reference counting, Rune has a full VM with a borrow checker, and Roto compiles to bytecode. The tradeoff is basically faster iteration with Rhai vs faster execution with Roto, with Rune sitting somewhere in the middle but feeling heavier.

I hope it stays small compared to the tech giants.

I want Kagi to have enough customers to run a business and earn a profit but not so many that they need to make the product worse to continue growing.

The customizability of Kagi is what really makes it shine.

You can ban Pinterest links, boost Mozdev, ban listicles, boost whatever.

Kagi gets very good very fast as you customize it and it's easy to keep it updated as sites go up or down in quality.

The community shared boost and ban lists are a great resource too. Making it easy to see and copy what others find useful.

It's not just you and it's not just Zed. Dark themes tend to be low contrast gray on gray.

I usually look for a dark theme that looks good and then make a custom version with darker the background colors and brighter the foreground colors.

Maybe it's time for to start publishing high contrast dark themes instead of just fixing it for myself.

I do a lot of markdown editing, techdocs, static site generator, and the gray on gray makes me want to swap back to VSCodium for that task.

Those numbers are meaningless unless you specify what you get in return.

It is like saying that you pay $30,000 for a car. But the most important question is: For which car?

Also, if the installation services are so expensive, you can always install everything yourself.

Study how to do it, get the tools and materials, and then do it. It would be time-consuming, challenging and perhaps it would carry extra risks. Absolutely.

But it is not rocket science. It can be done. As long as there is a motivation to do it, i.e. a good value you will get out of it in return, it should be a valid approach to consider, in my opinion.

Zed is great and close to being my favorite text editor over Vim but there are constant rough edges.

I spent a fair bit of time this weekend tracking down bugs in a project caused by format on save in Zed occasionally deleting the first line of Python classes.

I turned off format on save and life is good now but data loss bugs like that are pretty annoying in a text editor.
