Hi HN and สวัสดีครับ! I remember seeing this the first time in Vienna by a friend of mine, Michi who came back from NYC and I believe he learned about it at the local hacker space at the time: NYC resistor.
I knew Michi through the Metalab, our hacker space in Vienna. Originally the idea seems to have been from the Graffiti Research Lab, which is also what I've linked to on my page and in the repo's Readme.
I think the version that Michi used was a MacOS app (not sure which framework), but I've always wanted to make it a web app. So all you need now is a projector, a laser pointer, and a laptop (with a camera).
I've already tried a few fun setups (eg using the iPhone's camera or using AirPlay connected to the projector). It's quite flexible.
Let me know if you end up using it and please share videos / photos and I'd be happy to put them up.
I know the original is old-skool cool, which I think makes this a fun project.
I'll try to set it up at the next CCC (2027) - if you see me there, come say Hi (I'll probably be in a banana costume).
The original, or at least the first one that was released, was written in processing. I have the sourcecode around somewhere, doubt it will still compile though.
Thanks! I'm not much of a social media person (went so far that I made an Apple shortcut app to launch IG in the messages screen[0], so I can avoid the feed). But maybe I'll try to post something there.
(exe.dev co-founder here) The platform is designed make it easy for you to share if you like, but we are not typically in the business of pointing directly at products users make. Maybe we should change that! It would be fun to have a "best of exe.dev" on our site.
Ask creators before featuring them, but medium and substack and YouTube are popular platforms because of their discovery mechanisms, not because hosting text or video is especially hard these days.
Interestingly, it's the .xyz on our VM domain that causes problems. It's apparently far more of a problematic gTLD than I realized. E.g. it appears Southwest Airlines blocks the entire thing, as do some enterprise networks are working with.
Just checked and it also installed itself on my phone. iPhone 17 Pro, non-US App Store, on latest iOS beta, no MDM. Sounds like an Apple Store bug to me.
Why stop at financial loss? I did https://whentheywere.com - enter your DOB and get a feel on how you compare to Einstein, Michael Jordan, Steve Jobs and others.
it it's "just" a training exercise or test they could have announced the closing weeks or month before it happening massively reducing the cost fallout from it
not that the current administration has in generally acted with care when it comes to causing huge financial damage to US cities, especially such they don't like
